The functionality of condominium living combined with the ownership privileges of cooperative living can be yours at The American Cooperative. What’s more, the location of this highly anticipated community offers a dynamic lifestyle with access to the sights, sounds, and scenes of the City of Anoka. Here’s a taste of what surrounds you when make The American Cooperative your home.

HISTORY LESSON

Anoka is nestled along the Mighty Mississippi River and is bisected by the Rum River. For many decades, beginning in the 1840s, Anoka was an ideal site of logging operations, sawmills, woodworking plants, and other industries that relied on water as a source of power. In the late 1800s, the town was known as the center for its shoe factory and potato production.

In earlier times, the territory was neutral ground between the Dakota Sioux and Ojibwe (or Chippewa) Tribes. The name Anoka comes from the Dakota word A-NoKa-Tan-Han, meaning “on both sides” – in reference to its placement near the rivers – and the Ojibwe word On-O-Kay, which means “working the waters.”

Anoka is thought to be the first city in the United States to hold a Halloween celebration. Except for two years during World War II, this self-proclaimed “Halloween Capital of the World” has hosted spooky festivities each year since 1920.

ENTERTAINMENT & EATS

The American Cooperative overlooks Green Haven Golf Course. Open to the public, the venue offers an 18-hole course, golf leagues and tournaments, a banquet hall with full-service restaurant and bar, and a park-like backdrop.

Our location is a stone’s throw away from a host of activities. You will find no shortage of things to do, see, and explore among Anoka’s several city and community parks, the Anoka Nature Preserve, Lyric Arts Main Street Stage, and a historic downtown district booming with shops and restaurants.

Main Street and surrounding avenues are lined with the types of shops that make small towns famous, from bookstores and antiques shops to boutiques filled with one-of-a-kind and locally made gifts. You’ll find jewelers, apparel and shoes, trendy accessories, home furniture and décor, and so much more.

Shop up an appetite? Anoka’s eateries can help quiet those hunger pangs. The selection of cuisine found here covers everything from North America to the South Pacific. Experience small cafés like Truffles & Tortes or the pub-like atmosphere of Serum’s Good Time Emporium. Whether you’re after fine dining fare or cheap eats, you’ll discover endless options to sit down and enjoy a meal or grab some grub on the go.

EVENTS

The City of Anoka is a hotbed for events throughout the seasons.

Early each year, the Anoka Winterfest celebrates the wonder of winter with music, bonfires, selfie stations, cocoa and s’mores, arts and crafts, and activities like sledding, ice skating, and snowshoeing. Adults and children can enjoy themselves indoors and out during this two-day event.

Saturdays during summer, the downtown streets line with automobiles for the Anoka Classic Car Show. Summer is also a great time to enjoy things like the Anoka Riverfest & Craft Fair, the Anoka Food Truck Festival, and the annual Fourth of July fireworks show at Castle Field, near the high school.

Anoka celebrates a variety of Halloween-related events. Some of those events include the Gray Ghost Run, the Light Up the Night Parade, and the themed Orange Tie Ball.
